Sorry....

I'm completely sorry that I've neglected this blog for two weeks. Timothy just asked to watch Pinnochio in Chinese so I finally get a moment to myself!!

What's new here? Well, many things, actually. In the last two weeks:
1) Timothy completed swim lessons and had his show-off day (video coming soon).
2) I had my dissertation proposal pre-defense and then had one week to get corrections in to my advisor (I turned them in a few hours ago).
3) Timothy had his third birthday, dinosaur rocket ship style, with 60 invited guests (pictures coming soon)!
4) We got all Timothy's old clothes priced for a consignment sale and bought things for the new baby (snugli, swing, carseat, etc).
5) We reorganized Timothy's closet so that he can share it with the new baby.
6) We bought a futon/bunk bed for our new exchange student and assembled it.

And, of course, our new exchange student from South Korea arrives TOMORROW!!

Today we've been cleaning like mad for the new student. We don't want him to walk into our house for the first time to see spaghetti on the floor and smooshed animal crackers on the sofa!! (Of course, at some point, he's going to see those things in this house anyway!!)

Tomorrow we go to the airport to pick him up and then we're staying in Dallas for a visit to Fossil Rim wildlife safari for my niece's birthday. Yep--busy, busy times around here!!

I will share a funny story, though.

I've been writing a great deal--hours and hours a day trying to revise my proposal by the deadline. Timothy and David have been great about cheering me on and bringing me snacks and water. David's talked about what a prolific writer I am when I get going!

Today we were eating dinner and Timothy turned to me and said "Mommy, you're prolific!" I smiled and asked "I'm a prolific writer?" He shook his head. "Nope, you're a prolific eater"

Say Whaaaaat?

Three crazy things that Timothy said:

1. He handed David a model airplane off our shelf that he knows he's not supposed to play with and said "Here Daddy, this is yours from when you were my age!"

2. As you know, Timothy has an imaginary friend named Mimi. Mimi is always causing trouble. We were driving to Walgreens this morning and Timothy was singing a little song. When I really started to listen to him, he was singing "Mimi puts mommy in a cage and I get the key and lock her up and she can't come out..." Ummm, I was pretty disturbed.

3. We picked up some disgusting snow cones today. How can you ruin a snow cone? Anyway, they did. Timothy handed his to us and said "I don't like snow condoms"

Swim Lessons

Timothy took swim lessons last year and he did absolutely great!! It was a mother/child class and we both had so much fun.

When this summer neared, I called and left three messages with the swim teacher in the beginning of May and never heard anything. Today I get a call asking me if I want to start swim lessons tomorrow.

Because Timothy did so great, they want to put him in the indepdent swimming class even though he isn't quite three yet. I'm a little worried that I'm not allowed to stay at the pool during this time, but I know he'll do fine. They have a "show-off" day at the end of the two week session so I will be able to see his skills and take pictures.

Pregnancy Week 10

What's Going on With Baby
Though he's barely the size of a kumquat — a little over an inch or so long, crown to bottom — and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce, your baby has now completed the most critical portion of his development. This is the beginning of the so-called fetal period, a time when the tissues and organs in his body rapidly grow and mature.

He's swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. Vital organs — including his kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver (now making red blood cells in place of the disappearing yolk sac) — are in place and starting to function, though they'll continue to develop throughout your pregnancy.

If you could take a peek inside your womb, you'd spot minute details, like tiny nails forming on fingers and toes (no more webbing) and peach-fuzz hair beginning to grow on tender skin.

In other developments: Your baby's limbs can bend now. His hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over his heart, and his feet may be long enough to meet in front of his body. The outline of his spine is clearly visible through translucent skin, and spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from his spinal cord. Your baby's forehead temporarily bulges with his developing brain and sits very high on his head, which measures half the length of his body. From crown to rump, he's about 1 1/4 inches long. In the coming weeks, your baby will again double in size — to nearly 3 inches.

What's Going on With Mother
At your next prenatal visit, you may be able to hear your baby's rapid heartbeat with the help of a Doppler stethoscope, a handheld ultrasound device that your practitioner places on your belly. Many women say that the beating of their baby's tiny heart sounded like the thunder of galloping horses and hearing it for the first time was very moving. Before you got pregnant, your uterus was the size of a small pear. By this week, it's as big as a grapefruit.

You may or may not be ready for maternity wear now. Even if you're not there yet, your regular clothes are probably feeling uncomfortably tight and your blossoming breasts are straining the seams of your bra. The thickening in your midsection is most likely due to slight weight gain and bloating. If you're between regular and maternity clothes, pants and skirts with forgiving elastic waistbands (or low-rise waistlines that sit below your belly) will provide some much-needed comfort.

What's Really Going on With Mother
I no longer have extreme, all-the-time exhaustion. However, the nausea and food aversions seem to be here to stay. It's not unusual for me to take two bites of something and throw it away. I've been eating a lot of grapes. I've lost about 6lbs and just feel constantly sick. I'm sick to my stomach several times a day. To add to that, my joints have been hurting, especially when I try to go to sleep at night. I cannot wait for the end of my first trimester--I'm hoping it brings me some relief!!

Look What I Know!

As per Doman's suggestions, we don't regularly test Timothy or ask him to prove what he knows. Sometimes he spontaneously impresses us, though (like all children do), and that's always quite fun.

Yesterday we went to the Children's Museum to pay for his birthday party and play for a little while. We were headed to the rocket ship and we walked past the world globe. With hardly a glance at the globe, Timothy pointed directly at China and said "Look, China! There's Jimmy!!" Then he was on his merry way...

After this we went to Wal-Mart. There was a pole with directional signs and arrows and Timothy pointed up and said "Look! That says baby!!" And it did. Of course, he always wanted to buy the baby a surprise to play with...like that toy or that toy or that one, that one the helicopter, or the computer, buy it, buy it mommy, or the blocks. Buy them! Buy them, mommy.

Reading

During "Bring me a Book Time" we always set the timer to 20 minutes and Timothy gets to choose the books we read.

Lately, though, he's been choosing his favorites and reading them to me!! Some he has memorized and can read word for word, some he just makes up a story based on the pictures. Today, he "read" the Three Little Pigs. "Once upon a time there was a little pig. He made a brick house. The big bad wolf wanted soup. See, he's crying. Then the end"

Lion King

Today we watched The Lion King for the first time while we were winding down for a nap.

Timothy was naming all the animals and then it showed some deer. He said "What's that?" and I said "It's a deer." He shook his head and said "No it's not--it's a gazelle!!"

Fourth of July

Sorry it's been awhile!! I had a crazy week last week. I helped with my cousin's Vacation Bible School (which was fabulous) and then, on Tuesday night, I started getting a little bit sick. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday I continued to feel sick and could not even keep down water. This ended with a Friday night ER trip for IV fluids and nausea medication. Surprisingly, the doctor thought I had some sort of gastrointestinal infection and not morning sickness--either way, I'm not sick and I can drink water now. Things are getting better!!

Timothy had a wonderful Fourth of July--I love his imagination!! As we were watching fireworks from afar, Timothy gazed in amazement at some green ones and said "Look! It's like broccoli!!" A red one was like a volcano, too! :-)

Timothy's certainly gifted in the creative arts. People who worried that Doman children would become smarty pants with no imagination, have no fear--it didn't happen with Timothy. Yes, Timothy knows a lot, but he makes stuff up all the time, too. He has an imaginary friend named Mimi who does horrible, horrible things (like breaking our tractor). He tells me that he saw giant cucumbers outside or that he's running from a triceratops! So very creative!! I only hope that we're able to foster his imagination as he continues to grow.

We've been looking for a crawling track on craigslist and eBay for the new baby, but we've pretty much decided we wanted to make one that goes all the way around our bed. Timothy slept in his crawling track right by our bed for the first five months and it was just so nice to have him so close in his safe little area. I did find this on craigslist, though, if you live in the Dallas area.

Sorry so crazy and fragmented tonight. I've been busy preparing my dissertation proprosal for a predefense meeting next week, we've had a prenatal appointment and a sonogram this week, and I'm trying to plan a birthday party...a dinosaur rocket ship birthday. Timothy doesn't want a dinosaur OR rocket ship party, he wants a dinosaur rocket ship party. They must be together. Now I have to be creative and figure out how to make that work...
