Our Experiences with Right Start Math

We have 4 lessons left in Right Start Math! We just finished our telling time unit, then we went to estimating lenths, now we're on measuring liquids. It looks like the next few days are just a review of what we've learned this year and some word problems.

Overall, I've been very pleased with RightStart Math Level A this year. Timothy has enjoyed it and I like how hands-on EVERYTHING is! Off the top of my head, Timothy has learned to:

Recognize and write numerals
Use an abacus
Recognize place value
Add
Subtract
Identify coints and their values
Count by 2s (to 30)
Count by 5s (to 100)
Identify even and odd numbers
Count by 10s (to 100)
Read numbers to 1000
Recognize parallel/perpendicular lines
Tell time (to 15 mins)
Estimate lengths
Measure liquids
Complete word problems
Recognize halves, quarters

Overall, RightStart Math is probably a year ahead of the public school curriculum. Timothy could not really even recognize the numbers when we started this year, but now he can UNDERSTAND advanced math concepts with ease. I'm thrilled!

Welcome to our blog!!

This is the place where we share our experiences, triumphs, and setbacks as we teach our child using methods inspired by Glenn Doman's Gentle Revolution.

The purpose of this blog is to 1) spread information about the Doman programs 2) serve as a practical example of how Doman can be accomplished 3) share our experiences using the program 4) let family and friends see Timothy's progress and 5) serve as a record and reminder of our incredible journey.

We are, by no means, the perfect examples of how to do the program, and we're not trying to be. We do hope, though, to show the world that learning is fun for a child. Tiny children CAN learn, and tiny children SHOULD learn. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn about the world...when he's young and when it's easy for him to learn about the world.

Because there are so many misconceptions of the Glenn Doman program, we felt the need to provide some of the basic beliefs:

- Tiny children (meaning children from birth to six) can learn anything that is presented to them in an honest and factual way.
- Children enjoy learning.
- Parents, not experts, are the best teachers for their children. Children learn best when taught by someone who loves them and adores them, and who knows them inside and out.
- Every child has the makings of a genius. Intelligence is not something that is genetically determined but rather a product of the environment. The right environment, then, is crucial in helping a child develop his full potential.

We believe (and have seen with our own eyes) that children under the age of one can: learn quantities, add, subtract, multiply, divide, do square roots, read words, read sentences, read books, learn facts, swim...

No, we don't spend all day doing flash cards. No, we don't stop our child from playing with toys. No, we don't pressure our child to learn when he doesn't want to.

In this house, learning is the funnest game we play!!
