Violin

Timothy's still plugging away at violin! I have to admit that we've not been practicing like we should...life is all topsy-turvy in preparation for a new baby sister in our household!

Nevertheless, he continues to make progress. He can play the first variation of Twinkle completely! While you may think that his lessons are spent, well, playing the violin, they aren't. Timothy is a talker...it's amazing that his teacher is as patient as she is! He'll be right in the middle of playing a line and then he'll stop, put the violin down, and say, "Hey, did you know that fire can melt plastic?" She'll acknowledge what he says, get him back into playing position, and then he'll start talking about something else.

We always talk to him about the need to concentrate on violin while he's at violin practice. We explain that we pay a great deal of money for him to take lessons and he needs to focus just on playing the violin. Ultimately, though, what can we do? The always-talking part of Timothy is just part of who he is!

I read something recently that said, "If you don't listen to the small stuff when they're young, they won't tell you the big stuff when they're older because, to them, it was always the big stuff." I hope that's true! Sometimes, listening to a five year old talk endlessly about anything under the sun gets old. However, considering what he's been through, we're just glad he talks!
